Meaning of Namkaran Sanskar

Namkaran Sanskar means establishing a child’s identity and giving him a name by worshipping God and by finding right and lucky initials for him. There are in total 16 Hindu Samskaras that happens after a child is born, and Namkaran Sanskar is fifth on this list which is a prominent and auspicious ceremony. People decide names, there are rituals that are performed before, during and after Namkaran and one of the highly significant factors in this entire tradition is ‘Muhurat’.

Muhurat is a date and time slot which is believed to be auspicious for a certain task. Hindu people believe a lot in doing tasks as per good and positive muhurat. A namkaran muhurat is also finalized before conducting it. Mostly pundits find out a right time from Hindu calendar known as ‘Panchang’ by seeing position of planets and other factors and then this best suited time is utilized for child naming ceremony. Many other factors like birth date, birth time, Nakshatra as the tithi in which child is born and zodiac sign matters. A priest or an astrologer can help in finding a right muhurat for naming your new-born child.

There are some dates and days which are considered inauspicious for this ceremony such as Chaturthi, Navami, Amavasya and Chaturdashi. Mostly any other tithi other than these days can be kept as a day for namkaran sanskar. There are 27 nakshatras in total out of which some of them are considered favorable and some are not.

The process of naming a child on the basis of nakshatra is called Nakshatram. There is no specific day of any week which is always right or apt for this child naming ceremony. It can be done on any day provided, the date goes well with your child’s birth details. The birth chart also known as kundli or horoscope is also prepared on the same day. Until 10 days after the birth of a child, this ceremony cannot be performed as it is not a right muhurat. This ceremony has to be done within a year of birth of a child.

The name of a child is kept by doing a complete study of his horoscope and birth chart so that he gets a name which brings good luck to him. One more thing which is not known to many is that in Hindu rituals, a child gets two names at Namkaran, one which is disclosed to people and becomes a forever identity and one name which is a secret name only known to the parents of that child. It is believed that this secret name helps in keeping the child safe from any negative powers or forces. One thing which is common for all names is that they should be meaningful and should have a positive sense.
